Tafolla Wins Tomás Rivera Children’s Book Award

How many uses are there for a traditional Mexican popsicle treat on a hot summer day?

Turns out there are quite a few, and for that the book What Can You Do with a Paleta?, written by Carmen Tafolla and illustrated by Magaly Morales, has been named the Tomás Rivera Mexican American Children’s Book Award recipient for works published in 2008-2009. The award, established at Texas State University in 1995, is designed to encourage authors, illustrators and publishers to produce books that authentically reflect the lives of Mexican American children and young adults in the United States.

Join the Texas State University Education Department and the San Antonio Public Library to honor Carmen Tafolla on Friday, April 16, 10:00 am at the Central Library Auditorium. Carmen Tafolla will also sign books at the Texas Library Association Conference, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center on Thursday, April 15, 1:00 pm at the Tricyle Press booth.

I am excited to be heading to my hometown next week for the TLA Conference and Dr. Tafolla's celebration ---- will be sure to share more from San Antonio!
